Blizzard Damage
Blizzards can create lots of damage. They can turn a neighborhood upside down and make it stay that way for a few weeks.
During blizzards:
driving becomes difficult or impossible because of the low visibility
whiteout conditions can occur- when the blowing snow causes you to only see white (more common with drier, powder like snow)
strong winds- up to 100 mph
low temperatures- as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit
low windchill (the wind speed + the temperature = windchill) factor which can lead to hypothermia. A strong windchill and temperatures under 32 degrees Fahrenheit make it feel like -5 degrees Fahrenheit.
tree limbs can fall
power outages can occur
drifts (banks of deep snow swept up by the wind) can block roads and side walks, making travel difficult even after the storm
pipes can freeze and burst
fuel sources can be shut off
Blizzards can immobilize large areas, stranding motorists, and create a loss of live stock.
